
Jewell Ruth-Ella Humphrey earned her PhD from the Department of Anthropology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and is a proud alumna of Africana studies at Howard University. She is currently a Post-Doctoral researcher at the University of Virginia, Carter G. Woodson Institute.
Her research interests include African diaspora heritage preservation, Black digital humanities, maritime archaeology, and digital archival practices. Her research has spanned across the African diaspora in the Caribbean, Latin America, and the US.
Her dissertation titled “In Search of the Black Star Line” is an ongoing effort to document and digitize the history of the Black Star Line: the Pan-African shiping company initiated by Marcus Garvey in 1919.
Inspired by her namesakes and grandmothers, Jewel & Ruth Ella, her love for heritage preservation is the driving passion behind this work.
